DERMAPLANING AT OUR KENT CLINIC

If the use of the word scalpel has suddenly made you gulp and run for cover, don’t worry, it’s quite gentle and can be compared to the sensation of fingernails being moved across your skin, similar to the sensation of shaving your legs. Dermaplaning (not to be confused with Dermabrasion) is suitable for women who are pregnant or nursing, as no peeling agents are used during the process.

HOW IS IT DONE?
After your consultation is complete, we’ll thoroughly cleanse and dry your skin. Following this, we’re ready to go ahead – To summarise, we gently pull a small area of skin taut with one hand (to smooth and tighten it) and then use the other hand to gently scrape off the top layer of skin cells with the scalpel held at a 45 degree angle. The strokes are short and swift and will quickly remove any ‘peach fuzz’ along with the dead skin cells.

A SUMMARY OF THE BENEFITS OF DERMAPLANING
Deeper penetration for skin products
Smoother looking skin
Suitable for virtually all skin types
Removes the facial hair that traps oil and dirt.
Removes vellus hair (peach fuzz)
Reduces the appearance of fine lines & minor scars.

PEACH FUZZ
Commonly referred to as ‘peach fuzz’, these thin and tiny ‘baby hairs’ that women have on their face generally increase in number as they get older, although it can affect younger women too. The correct terminology for these types of hairs are actually known as vellus, and they differ from the hairs that grow on the head and in the armpits. Fortunately, because vellus hairs are so thin, they don’t grow back stubbly so there’s no need to worry that they’ll look worse as they naturally grow back over time.

EXFOLIATION
As we mentioned, dermaplaning is essentially a two-fold process that removes not just vellus hair, but also the very top layer of your skin at the same time. Once completed, dermaplaning reveals the brighter, smoother layer of skin that’s underneath, giving a more vibrant and glowing complexion. Since a scalpel is used to do this, you’ll no doubt be concerned about the proficiency of the person who’s weilding it… and rightly so. Our clincians are fully trained, licensed and insured so there’s no need to worry whether you’re in the right hands.

Dermaplaning treatments are actually a lot more common than you might think, particulary amongst actresses and models. Under the bright glare of modern HD camera lighting, peach fuzz and minor skin blemishes are far more noticeable, so it makes sense to opt for dermaplaning if you have to endure bright lights for a living – It’s certainly not only Photoshop that can make models and actresses appear younger when you see them in magazines or on the Big Screen!

Of course, it’s not just for them, it’s perfect for you too. Even if it’s not something you’d consider for your everyday life, pampering yourself with a dermaplaing session for that special occasion can give you a real confidence boost. If you’re attending a wedding or party, there’s bound to be plenty of people taking your picture throughtout the night, especially as virtually everyone carries a mobile phone these days. There’s now no reason to cringe when you see pictures of yourself on social media the next day; spoilng yourself with a dermaplaning treatment beforehand will see to that.

OTHER BENEFITS OF DERMAPLANING
Aside from how you’ll look and feel afterwards, there are also other practical upsides to dermaplaning. The process of removing the top layer of skin cells actually makes it far easier for the skin to absorb the nourishing moisturisers and other skincare products that you apply as part of your daily routine. As the newer, more supple skin is revealed, it creates the perfect medium for higher absorbtion which leaves your skin looking and feeling plumper and more hydrated. In addition, if you have fine lines and minor wrinkles, dermaplaning can also help conceal these too, making them far less noticeable.

It’s also great for your makeup routine as well, as the smooth canvas of your skin makes the overall application much easier, allowing you to achieve much better results. If all this isn’t enough to convince you, it’s worth pointing out that dermaplaning is often used as a matter of course by some dermatologists when they are preparing their clients for more more invasive procedures such as chemical peels or laser treatments.

IS DERMAPLANING SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?
Whilst almost anyone can benefit from dermaplaning, especially those who suffer from dry skin, there are certain scenarios where we’re not able to offer this treatment. If you suffer from acne, you won’t be able to undergo a dermaplaning session at our Kent clinic. For obvious reasons, it would be extremely unprofessional of us to use a scalpel on acneic skin but don’t worry if this applies to you, it’s still something that you can have once your acne has cleared up.

Furthermore, as everyone undergoing dermaplaning is given a suitable assessment prior to treatment, we’ll also need to know if you suffer from any allergies or skin conditions that may prevent us from carrying out the procedure.

PREGNANCY/NURSING MOTHERS
If you’re pregnant or nursing, dermaplaning is a safe procedure as, unlike certain other treatments, there are no harsh chemicals involved so there’s no risk of any harm to your baby.

DOES DERMAPLANING HURT?
No, not really. If you already shave your legs, this is a fairly accurate representation of what it feels like, albeit on the face as opposed to your legs.

JUST TO REITERATE…
On a final note, one of the primary concerns we hear from clients who are interested in dermaplaning is the worry that the hair will grow back thicker afterwards; we can reassure you that it won’t. This type of facial hair is very fine on women but for men, the facial hair will obviously still grow back in the same way that it always has.
